Barrier-free travel

We want to ensure that everyone can use local public transport in North Hesse without any problems. Here we answer the most important questions about barrier-free travel in the NVV.

In the NVV Stop Info app, you can check the accessibility of many stops and stations in the NVV area. As you select your route, you can immediately see whether the boarding or alighting stop is accessible—this is indicated by a color code (green, yellow, or red). The app is optimized for mobile devices and can be easily used on smartphones or tablets. It is also compatible with screen readers, so that blind or visually impaired people can access the accessibility information.

Alternatively, you can call the toll-free NVV Service Hotline at 0800-939-0800 to get information about the stop you’re looking for. Our NVV Service Hotline is available every day from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, we are even available until midnight.

You will find route maps at stops in the KasselPlus area as well as in cities with StadtBus services. On these maps, stops that are not equipped with accessibility features are marked in gray, while stops that are at least partially equipped with accessibility features are shown in white.

  • You can find information about the schedule in the NVV timetable information service. This service is also compatible with screen readers, allowing blind and visually impaired people to have the text read aloud.
  • Our NVV Mobil app provides information both visually and audibly. Departure times are displayed and announced in real time, making it easy to identify delays. The app’s usability for visually impaired and blind people will be further improved shortly.

  • For passengers with visual impairments:
We recommend booking AST trips by phone. Our staff will be happy to help you plan your trip.
  • For passengers with hearing impairments:
Our online booking portal is the ideal solution for people with hearing impairments. Here you can plan your trips from the comfort of your own home.

Please remember to specify assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, and service dogs/guide dogs when booking, as not all AST vehicles are equipped to accommodate all types of assistive devices.

We also offer the KVG-Schaddel service, which can be booked both by phone and via the user-friendly Schaddel app. For more information, visit kvg-schaddel.de

When traveling by train, the Deutsche Bahn Mobility Service Center is available to assist you. They will take care of everything you need if you require help boarding, transferring, or exiting the train. This includes, for example, providing a lift for your wheelchair. They are also happy to answer questions about suitable trains, station accessibility, or minimum transfer times. For more information, visit: Services for Accessible Travel

In addition, staff at the station missions at many train stations are there to assist people with disabilities and offer their support. For more information, visit bahnhofsmission.de

  • Two-Senses Principle: At many stops and in all vehicles within the NVV area, information is presented in a way that engages at least two of the three senses—sight, hearing, and touch. This means that the information is also accessible to people with visual or hearing impairments.
  • Dynamic Passenger Information System (DPI): Many stops in the NVV area are equipped with DPI displays. These displays provide real-time information about upcoming departures and any schedule disruptions. The DPI displays are also suitable for people with visual impairments, as all information is available via voice announcements at the touch of a button.

  • Trains: Our train fleet consists almost entirely of railcars, which allow for level access at many modernized platforms. Folding ramps ensure that even heavy electric wheelchairs can easily board the trains.
  • Buses: All buses in the NVV network are accessible. Folding ramps allow wheelchair users to board and exit at stops that do not yet meet the latest guidelines. Our new green-and-white buses in the NVV design offer additional accessibility features such as tactile and audible stop request buttons, expanded multi-purpose areas, and wide, quick-opening door systems.
  • Wheelchairs, e-scooters, and walkers have designated space in the multi-purpose area of the vehicles. Please do not sit on your walker inside the vehicle, as its stability cannot be guaranteed and there is an increased risk of injury.

If you have a disability ID card with a token, you can ride public transportation for free. If the code “B” is listed on your disability ID card, your companion can also ride for free.

You can find more information on applying for a disability ID card and the token on the State of Hesse’s website.

Yes, dogs generally ride for free on NVV buses. This also applies to service dogs and guide dogs on the call-and-ride taxi service, provided you mention this when booking.

You can purchase tickets in the following ways:

Ask other passengers or the train crew: If necessary, they’ll be happy to help you purchase a ticket.
